By default, NETGEAR firewall rules block and prevent any unauthorized access to your local area network (LAN). However, you might want to allow remote access to LAN devices or applications by adding an inbound or outbound firewall rule to your DSL modem router.
- Inbound firewall rules allow access to LAN services from the Internet. By default, your router blocks all incoming service requests.
- Outbound firewall rules deny access to the Internet from LAN devices. By default, your router allows all outgoing traffic.
To set up firewall rules on your NETGEAR DSL modem router:
- Launch a web browser from a device that is connected to your router's network.
- Enter 192.168.0.1 or www.routerlogin.net.
A login window displays.
- Enter your user name and password.
The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
The BASIC Home page displays.
- From the left navigation pane, under Security, click or tap Firewall Rules.
On older devices, the menu might be called Content Filtering.
- Click or tap the Add button for an inbound or outbound service.
- Select a Service from the list.
If your service is not listed, define a customized service:
- From the left hand navigation pane, click or tap Services > Add Custom Service.
- Enter a Name for the new service
- Select the Type of protocol that the service uses.
- Enter the Starting port and Ending port.
- Click or tap Apply to add the new custom service.
- Select an Action to take for the service’s packets.
Note: You can define a schedule for your action to apply rules on a schedule. For more information, see How do I set up a blocking schedule on my NETGEAR router from the router web interface?
- In the Send to LAN server field, enter the IP address of the device or server on your LAN which will receive the inbound or outbound traffic covered by this rule.
- Select a WAN Users option to determine which packets are covered by the rule, based on their source wide area network (WAN) IP address:
- Any: All IP addresses are covered by this rule.
- Address range: IP addresses in a specified range are covered by this rule.
- Single address: Only one specified IP address is covered by this rule.
- Select a Log option to determine which packets covered by this rule are logged:
- Always: Always logs traffic, regardless of whether it matches your rule.
This option might be helpful when testing and debugging your rules.
- Never: Never logs traffic, regardless of whether it matches your rule.
- Match: Logs traffic only if it matches your rule.
- Not Match: Logs traffic only if it does not match your rule.
- Click or tap Apply.
Your settings are saved.
