If you can’t access your NETGEAR router, follow basic troubleshooting steps first. For more information, see I can’t access my router; what do I do?
If you still can’t access your router, you might be able to regain access with more advanced troubleshooting. This article provides advanced troubleshooting steps if you can’t access your router.
To regain access to your NETGEAR router, try the following:
Connect directly to your router with Ethernet
- Using an Ethernet cable, connect your computer to one of your router’s LAN ports.
- Check that the Internet LED is lit on the router.
If the Internet LED is not lit, troubleshoot the Internet LED. For more information, see How to resolve amber LEDs or a blinking power LED on NETGEAR routers.
- Check that the LED on your computer’s Ethernet port is lit.
If the Ethernet port LED is not lit, troubleshoot your network adapter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to troubleshoot your network adapter.
Use your computer's command prompt to test your router connection
If you use Microsoft Windows:
- Press the Windows button on your keyboard or click the Windows icon in the taskbar to open the Start menu.
- Type cmd.
The Command Prompt app appears.
- Press Enter or click Command Prompt.
The command prompt displays.
- Type ping 192.168.1.1 into the command prompt.
- Press Enter.
Your computer pings your router.
Ping statistics display:
- If the command line shows replies from 192.168.1.1, your computer is connected to your router.
- If the command line shows ping failures, your computer is not connected to your router.
If you use Apple macOS:
- Open the Applications folder.
- Open Utilities.
- Double-click Terminal.
The terminal displays.
- Type ping 192.168.1.1 into the command prompt.
- Press Enter.
Your computer pings your router.
Ping statistics display:
- If the command line shows replies from 192.168.1.1, your computer is connected to your router.
- If the command line shows request timeouts, your computer is not connected to your router.
Disable proxy servers
Make sure that proxy servers are disabled for your web browser. Proxy servers are configured in your web browser to hide your IP address. Typically, they are disabled by default, but you might have installed other software that enabled them, or another user might have set them up.
